Things to Do

 

 

  • AuSable River - We are located within 300 feet of the world famous AuSable River.  The AuSable River is consider trophy trout fishing waters and offers some to the best fly fishing in the country.   • Michigan Magazine Museum - This museum is located in the nearby village of Comins and features the products of crafts people featured on the Michigan Magazine TV Show.
  • Boating. The floodwaters above the Mio Hydro Electric Dam and numerous inland lakes offer excellent opportunities for boating.
  • Canoeing, Kayaking, Tubing and Rafting - There are several canoe liveries in or near Mio offering canoe, kayak, tube and raft trips on the AuSable River lasting from a few hours to several days: Alcona Canoe & Campground, Gott’s Landing Canoe Livery, Hinchman’s Acres Resort & Canoe Rental, Jim’s Canoe & Cabins, Parmalee Trading Post.
  • Michigan AuSable Valley Railroad - This 1/4 scale passenger train ride through the beautiful scenic landscape of Northern Michigan is popular with children of all ages.
  • Cross-country Skiing.  Groomed cross-country ski trails are available south of town.
  • Fall Color tours.  The Huron National Forest offers some of the best fall color viewing in the state.  Prime color time is usually the last week of September and first week of October.
  • Fishing - In addition the the AuSable River there are also several inland lakes in the area offering excellent fishing for bass, blue gills, pike and walleye. 
  • Golfing - Excellent golf courses are located in the nearby villages of Mio, Fairview, Comins, Glennie and Lewiston.
  • Hiking - The Huron National Forest surrounds us and offers numerous hiking trails.
  • Horseback Riding - The Michigan Shore-to-Shore Trail crosses the state just south of Mio. Karefree Ranch in nearby Fairview offers guided trail rides.
  • Hunting. Located in the heart of the Huron National Forest, Mio offers an excellent base camp for your next small game of deer hunting trip.
  • ORV Trail Riding - trail head is located just south of town and ORVs are now allowed on the common roadways and businesses.  Bull Gap and Meadows trail arelocated south of town.
  • Snowmobile. Trail map
  • Steiner Museum - This museum is located in the nearby village of Fairview and features pioneer and logging artifacts.
  • Swimming.
  • Wildlife viewing.  Mio is home to the rare Kirkland Warbler.  Click here for information on Kirtland Warbler Tours. Jack Pine Wildlife Tour. The Jack Pine Wildlife Tour also originates in Mio. We are located directly across the street from the U.S. Forest Service Office where the Kirtland Warbler Tours begin.
  • Amish Country Tour - Mio’s Amish community offers a variety of of craft and specialty shops.
